"The Daughter Church Planting Seminar led by the staff of the Center for U.S. Missions has proven to be a crucial partner as we seek to cast a renewed church planting vision and provide training for congregations and their leaders."
“The mission of the Pacific Southwest District is to effectively resource congregations and schools to fulfill the Great Commission.” That is why the LCMS congregations in southern California, southern Nevada and Arizona have come together to form the Pacific Southwest District--to effectively resource congregations and schools to fulfill the Great Commission.
Just like every other District of Synod, we have had to wrestle with what that looks like. We have had to talk and listen, pray and ponder. What will it look like when we as a District are pressing into the Great Commission? It will look like congregations and schools being resourced to fulfill that Great Commission.
The Daughter Church Planting Seminar led by the staff of the Center for U.S. Missions has proven to be a crucial partner as we seek to cast a renewed church planting vision and provide training for congregations and their leaders. During August and September, 2006, our District sponsored three Daughter Church Planting Seminars spread geographically across our District. One seminar was held in Arizona for the Nevada and Arizona congregations, two were held in southern California.
Our informal “goals” for these seminars were to have at least 20 congregations participate and to have at least 10 of them commit to prayerfully consider planting a congregation in the next 3 years. Our gracious God blessed this strategy and 34 congregations attended, with 20 of them making that commitment.
This seminar was of vital assistance to us in the following ways.
- They cast a vision for congregations daughtering a new congregation. This is the best resource we have found to move us away from that “where is the District going to plant a church” syndrome.
- They lay the Biblical foundation and the mission principles for church planting.
- They lay out a practical strategy for casting the vision of daughtering a church in the potential mother congregation and then thinking about how to determine the mother church’s level of involvement.
- Again, practical ideas and strategies are shared on how to develop a church planting team and recruit and train a core launch team.
- There are even some beginning thoughts about how the new church plant and the mother church celebrate together the launch event of the new mission.
- There is a consistent, permeating emphasis on prayer and seeking God’s wisdom and direction.
If your District or a nearby District is sponsoring one of these Daughter Church Planting Seminars, you will be blessed as you dedicate the time and resources to send a team to envision, learn and pray together about this important mission strategy. It perhaps goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: the staff does an excellent job of presenting the material in an interesting, well-paced way.
“Resourcing congregations and schools to fulfill the Great Commission”--It is a huge task. We thank God for the partnership of the Center for U.S. Missions that is helping us in our mission through the Daughter Church Planting Seminar.
