For this reason, God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of JESUS every knee will bow – in heaven and on earth and under the earth – and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. – Philippians 2:10-11
Today is January 1 – the year of our Lord, 2019. Happy New Year!
If I could share one prayer for the coming year, my prayer would be that the year of our Lord, 2019, would also be known as 2019 B.C.
B.C. - Bow and Confess. Just as St. Paul wrote in his magnificent hymn, Philippians 2.
Bow and Confess. That every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD!
That’s why we are doing what we’re doing. Another passing year reminds me of the urgency of our mission – to equip disciples to multiply faith communities – to help those who are the Church start new faith communities in new places to reach new people… so that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess = BC!
Bow and Confess. That’s what we, who are the Church, claim to do. Because we bow our knee to the Lord Jesus and confess that He is our Lord, we actually desire to do what He wants done. He makes that clear in the Great Commission, as you are going about your life, make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20). Our Lord calls us to make disciples who make more disciples, who will gather in groups of disciples. Our Lord calls us to start new faith communities, new churches. We call that “church planting.”
When we talk about church planting, we’re not talking about land and buildings or even rushing into beginning new worship services in new places. We are talking about disciple-making, planting the church through relationships with those who don’t yet Bow and Confess. This means we spend time with them, introduce them to Jesus, help them to learn and love and serve Him, following what we ourselves model, which follows Jesus’ own model. This may result in a new congregation, or it may result in another type of faith community.
But we must start the process.
2019 would be a good year to do that.
Let me know how we can help you get started or take next steps – so that every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father!
