The demographic maps that follow use data compiled by the Center for U.S. Missions, as taken from The Association of Religious Data Archives (ARDA), including the number of LCMS churches identified by county in each state.

On each map, a county is assigned a percentage of unclaimed. This percent is calculated as the number of people who were identified by ARDA as unclaimed, then divided by the total population of the county, arriving at the percentage of people who are unclaimed in each county.  Also included on the map is the number of LCMS churches in each county.

It is our hope that this data will give you an overview of where the 'fields are ripe for harvest' and potential areas to consider planting a new church or mission to reach the unclaimed. Please download the map and statistics and reproduce as you desire, giving credit to the Center for U.S. Missions.

  • The data used by ARDA is taken from the 2010 U.S. Religious Census: Religious Congregations & Membership Study, published by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies (ASARB).
  • The unclaimed population are those that are not adherents of any of the 236 groups included in the Religious Congregations & Membership Study, 2010. (ARDA).
