Obtaining Video Licensing

It is illegal to show a clip from a movie in a public gathering such as worship without licensing. Christian Video Licensing International (CVLI), a partner firm with CCLI, the worship song licensing company familiar to many churches, provides such licensing.

Obtaining Resources

SermonCentral.com provides easy to search and review dramas. This subscription service also provides an excellent sermon illustration resource. “Keyword” and “topic” search capabilities make this site easy to navigate. A relatively new feature on the site is “Service Maker” which pulls together sermons, illustration, dramas, etc. around a theme. This site is done in partnership with Outreach Marketing, which provides excellent direct mail, print, website, banner, etc. resources.

Drama Ministry provides scripts via the mail and includes director and actor notes, articles on how to use drama within worship, etc. A large library of online scripts is available. This is a subscription service.

Willow Creek Resources offers drama, message ideas, music, and videos to enhance worship on a per item purchase basis.

Ministry and Media.com is a partnership between Group Publishing and author Leonard Sweet. This subscription site has a quality cross-referenced database of video clips from major release movies. “In” and “out” times are provided to allow for easy use of the DVD or VHS movies. Scripture passages, “Gospel connections” and discussion questions are provided with each write-up. Group’s Blockbuster Movie Illustrations are also available in paperback form.

Sermonspice.com is a clearinghouse for various Christian video production companies that create videos to use in worship and as message illustrations. This is a relatively new industry and their collection is slowly growing. Videos are easily downloaded and average $10-$20 each. These clips are easily imported into PowerPoint and other worship software programs. Videos can be previewed online at no cost. Each month a video is available to download free.

Illustrate – Video Clips to Visually Support Your Sermons by Bluefish TV is a high quality DVD resource that collects real-life stories from people across the country wrestling with life and faith. These stories are designed to help communicate practical, Biblical truth. Each volume has 10-12 videos which average 2-3 minutes in length. Some of the parodies are very funny and well received. These clips are easily imported into PowerPoint and other worship software programs.

The Internet Movie Database is a basic website to research major release movies. While the site does not come close to the cross-referenced resources provided at Ministry and Media, it is free and allows simple, high-level search capabilities.
